What is Cortisol Awakening Response?

The Cortisol Awakening Response (CAR) is a distinct measurement from the daily diurnal cortisol pattern. It measures the sharp rise in cortisol that occurs within the first 30-60 minutes after waking. This response is controlled by the hippocampus and provides unique insight into HPA axis function that cannot be obtained from regular cortisol testing alone.
